Northwest Washington
One of our favorites - and has been since we visited in the fall of 2018. We both fell in love with Washington on that trip. We were excited to return this year (2021) and find our initial impressions have largely remained the same. The forests of the Pacific Northwest are spectacular and hold some of our favorite places in the United States. The lush green undergrowth of moss and fern make the forests magical. And the coast has it’s own chill vibe.
We spent our time in the greater Seattle area bunked in a garage apartment on a great property with an amazing on-site host - Hi, Beverly! Bev generously made us homemade goodies and made sure we had everything we needed during our stay.
Her pet turkey, Todd, was a hoot! He provided great entertainment while he strutted his stuff and guarded his turf. Memories we’ll never forget!
We had four weeks and change in this corner of Washington, and our weekends were loaded up. Ferry rides across the sound, sea kayaking off San Juan Island in water so choppy it had us doing circles, exploring Deception Pass and the tiny town of Coupeville, spirit hopping in Snohomish, and hiking one of our best trails ever in North Cascades National Park - it was a exceptional ride. Before we left, we were already looking forward to returning. And we still are.
THE LOCAL GRUB
Shepherd’s Pie
Kayaking day on San Juan Island led us to The Cask and Schooner Restaurant -(permanently closed Oct 2022 ) - in Friday Harbor. After hours of fighting rough waters, we dropped in for a few tasty beverages and an early dinner while waiting on the last ferry of the day.
Hawk’s Nest Poutine
Woo! Poutine! Crispy hand cut tater-tots swimming in house made sausage gravy, topped with cheddar, bacon, scallions, and a bit of sour cream. THE most amazing brunch at the Strawberry Patch Café in Everett.
It’s been a while since we’ve had a good steak. Took an evening at Prime Steakhouse in Redmond for a late anniversary dinner. Delicious!
