hikes

Our very first “hike” ever happened by chance in 2016 during our 20th wedding anniversary trip to the Big Isle of Hawai’i. Two new lava flows had oozed out of the Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō cone on Kilauea Volcano's East Rift Zone, and Flow 61g crept its way downslope toward the ocean.

Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park opened an emergency access route at the end of Chain of Craters Road for visitors to better access and view the lava flow. The route was gravel terrain, near zero elevation, 100% unshaded, and 9miles round trip.

And it was amazing!

Today, we’re “weekend warriors” picking local day-hikes as we travel around the US.
