Greater Tucson
We have family living in Phoenix, so we’ve visited the Grand Canyon State a number of times over the years. To start off our journey, we decided our first stop would be Tucson. This gave us the opportunity to visit family we hadn’t seen in a while (thanks COVID), as well as explore new areas. On recommendations from friends, we stayed in the Catalina Foothills. We were not disappointed. It’s some of the prettiest scenery we’ve seen in the United States.
We landed a fantastic rental that was quiet, comfortable, and had everything we needed. Morning coffee with the sunrise out back were the perfect pairing. And it didn’t hurt that we were within walking distance of what would quickly become our favorite spot for Leg 1 , the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area.
We spent 2 weeks in Tucson, and neither of us had time to try biking/cycling lengthy distances around the city. We did manage to squeeze an evening of bike time in Sabino Canyon. But, I’m very much looking forward to returning at a later date to take advantage of the biking/cycling opportunities Tucson has to offer. Preferably in the early spring when temps are more ideal.
THE LOCAL GRUB
Sonoran Dog
Ever hear of a Sonoran Dog? Neither had we. A stylist with a local hair studio suggested we try one while we were in the area. “Get it from a food cart,” she said, “They have the best!”
She wasn’t wrong! Our chosen spot: El Sinaloense Hot Dog Cart on North Alvernon Way. Sweet bun toasted on the griddle, dog wrapped in bacon, covered with beans and salsa. This was the best thing we ate in Tucson!
Common fare at Bisbee’s Table in the tiny town of Bisbee, but they also offer local craft beers that we both tried and enjoyed. The interior of the establishment had numerous copper accents lending to the history of the town. Neat place for a good brunch.
Fish & O-Rings
First “greasy spoon” of our journey was with Bisbee Breakfast Club Sunrise -located in Tucson. While it probably doesn't really qualify as an actual “greasy spoon,” it’s not everyday you seen corned beef hash on the menu. And stepping out of my box to try it made me feel like it was. Surprisingly good!

the tasty zone
Found this tasty beverage at Saguaro Corners conveniently located just outside of Saguaro National Park. Since I’d never heard of a Huckleberry Margarita, trying one was a must. Yummy and tart with a touch of sweetness as a margarita should be; I sipped this awesomeness while munching on a plate of nachos, followed by a couple carnitas street tacos. Perfection.

THE FUN STUFF
5/2/21
If you search for “stuff to do in Tucson”, this mission appears near the top of every list. San Xavier del Bac Mission - covered in a brilliant white stucco that gleams in the desert sun – accurately earns the nickname “the white dove of the desert.”

Outdoor enthusiasts visiting Tucson will likely drop by Saguaro National Park. But if they have time to spare on their trip, Sabino Canyon Recreation Area (SCRA) should be considered a “must see” destination.

A 27-mile scenic route traversing 6000ft of elevation. The route mimics the dramatic landscape changes seen traveling from Mexico to Canada and is one of the most scenic drives in southeast Arizona.

Nice, short, beautiful hike in Sabino Canyon Recreation Area.

Old Bisbee is a funky little town tucked in the hills of the Mule Mountains. On a whim, we made a day trip of it to see what it was all about.

We squeezed in a last minute visit to the East District on a weekday after work. First experience in Saguaro National Park. Man, what a beautiful place!

Fun loop to explore! Fell in love with it on a solo hike, and completed it a second time so Lee could experience it.
