Grays Harbor Lighthouse
Grays Harbor Lighthouse - Westport WA
Washington’s tallest lighthouse, Grays Harbor Lighthouse stands 107 feet high. Once a beacon for the major logging port, the light was originally located 400 feet from the ocean.
After construction of the jetty and subsequent years of the gradual accumulation of the beach, Grays Harbor Lighthouse now sits among towering evergreens 3000 feet from shore and with just the lantern room peeking over the tree tops.
Typically, visitors can climb the 135 steps of the original cast-iron staircase and view the lantern room and its 360° view of Westport and the Pacific Ocean on any given tour day.
Unbeknownst to us, our day required timed reservation (COVID resurgence) and they were booked the rest of the day. So we were unable to have the complete tour experience.
We were, however, given the chance to step into the ground floor of the lighthouse while the current tour was in the lantern room. Exhibits in the octagonal room cover the history of the lighthouse, but the highlight of the entryway is the twisting cast-iron stairway - an awesome work of art all by itself.
If you’re visiting the Grays Harbor Lighthouse, another point of interest 2 miles north is the The Westport Maritime Museum with exhibits specific to the maritime history of South Beach. We had to skip it (pressed for time), but we love a museum and we’ll visit on our next visit to Point Chehalis.
