Located in a restored mercantile shop on Main Street and true to its name, the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History is an unassuming gem sharing tidbits of history on the small town of Mount Airy and the mountains surrounding it. Permeant exhibitions rest alongside both changing and traveling exhibits with interesting events occurring each month.
A work in progress the day of our visit, but a work in progress and a cool place to explore. Four floors of exhibits include displays on the native Cherokee, European migration to the region, early pioneer days, plenty of 1900s history, a handful of firetrucks from different eras, and clocktower panoramic views of Mount Airy, the countryside, and the surrounding mountains. Several sections of the museum were closed off during our visit indicating signs of growth. Cool place to spend a few hours escaping the summer heat.
