Katahdin Iron Works
Blast Furnace- Brownville ME
Once home to a thriving village complete with a school, town common, a hotel, and stock barns; the 55-foot tall blast furnace of Katahdin Iron Works and a single nearby charcoal kiln (once among sixteen) are the only remnants of the industrial community that forged pig iron sent to market for the creation of metal tools, machinery, and railroads. Located on a dirt road off Rt 11 between Brownville and Millinocket, the State Historic Site is surrounded by hiking, OHV trails, and camping.
Check in at KI Checkpoint Station is required, even if you're only visiting the state historical site.
We stumbled on Katahdin Iron Works when checking in for our Gulf Hagas Rim Trail & Pleasant River Tote hike. While we wouldn’t have driven the 55ish miles from Bangor to see it specifically, it was interesting to explore since we were right in front of it.
Though some of the interactive signs on site need a little love, others give a great representation of the area in its heyday.
