An outdoor adventure center located in Pinkham Notch, Great Glen Trails offers summer fun with guided kayak tours, hiking, biking, and trail running. Winter adventures include cross country skiing, snow tubing, snowshoeing, and Fatbike rentals. Groomed and backcountry winter trails offer something for every speed. GGT also offers narrated snow tours on their Mount Washington SnowCoach. The 90 minute tour takes guests to the tree line of Mount Washington while sharing facts and history of the area.

All of New Hampshire is beautiful, but Great Glen Trails was one of the prettiest spots we stopped at on leg 27. Wide fields covered in snow on a clear day made for perfect winter scenery. Wanting to try cross country skiing, we booked group lessons with Amanda and gave it a whirl!

The key thing we learned cross country skiing is that nothing is the same as downhill skiing. Setting aside the obvious vertical differences, the skis are different, the boots are different, clipping into the ski is different, moving is different. Even the poles are different. But as newbies, falling seemed to be the same; which is why our first less was how to get up when you eat it. Second is learning the glide.

Instruction was only until lunch, then Amanda let us loose to enjoy the trails. The hardest part is staying in the groomed grooves. It’s supposed to make things easier, but my legs want to go in a different direction than is required. So I tried to stay out of the tracks so as to not tear the grooves to shreds.

Cross country skiing was a fun experience and we’re glad we tried it, the sport takes a lot of work for the reward. Had we ever gotten the movement down, our thoughts might be different. I’d much rather strap on some snowshoes to explore the back country! But it was a beautiful day and we had fun playing in the snow!
