Devils Tower
Devils Tower - WY
Sacred “Bear Lodge” - also known as Devils Tower - rises 867ft from its base and is comprised of some of the coolest vertical igneous rock formations on earth. In an effort to protect the area from settlement and to protect the scientific geological interest of the towering butte, Devils Tower became America’s first national monument in 1906. Today, the historical landmark is a popular destination for climbers and vacationers wishing to get a closer look at Wyoming’s natural Wonder.
If you’re headed to Devils Tower National Monument, you cant miss it. The geological feature juts 1200+ over the prairie of the Belle Fourche River allowing you to see it for miles.
One of the unexpected delights we found entering the monument grounds is Prairie Dog Town. I’m not even certain I’d ever seen a prairie dog before, but the marked field is loaded with black-tailed prairie dogs poking their heads out of holes and wandering the preserve looking for food.
At the tower we walked Devils Tower Trail. The trail is just a mile and a half and circles the tower allowing for excellent views of the butte.
Along the path, we passed brightly colored strips of cloth tied to delicate tree branches. Blowing in the breeze and catching the autumn light, these strips of cloth — often referred to as Prayer Ribbons — are a representation of the Native American prayers of ceremonies and rituals that still take place at the Tower today.
It’s considered culturally insensitive to photograph these Prayer Ribbons, and it’s requested not to do so.
