Little Bighorn Battlefield
The Indian Memorial - Little Bighorn Battlefield MT
Located just off I-90 in Crow Agency, MT sits Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument.
The location has multiple elements creating the monument including Little Big Horn Visitor Center, Custer’s Last Stand Memorial, Native American Memorial, Seventh Calvary Horse Cemetery and the Little Bighorn Battlefield which visitors can view via Battlefield Tour Road.
In the Little Bighorn Visitor Center sits a number of exhibits pertinent to the battlefield. Weapons of war rest alongside belongings of Cheyenne warrior and 7th cavalrymen. There are maps and diagrams. And along the walls one can find recountings from individuals of both sides.
Custer’s Last Stand Memorial sits on Last Stand Hill. White markers surround an inscribed obelisk memorializing the fallen and the site now contains the reinterred remains of men who were once buried where they fell across the battlefield.
The Native American Memorial remembers the sacrifice of the 5 Native American tribes impacted at the Battle of Little Bighorn. The circular monument blends with the landscape and inscriptions along the walls contain stories from each tribe.
The Seventh Calvary Horse Cemetery sits in the shadow of Custer’s Last Stand Memorial — on the opposite side of the road from the obelisk — and can be easily missed. The site contains the remains of horses collected from the battlefield and those shot to create barricades at the time of the battle.
Battlefield Tour Rd extends roughly 5 miles to Reno-Benteen Battlefield - the second stage of the Battle of Little Bighorn. The route contains pullouts with interpretive signage and offers expansive views of the of both battlefields. Markers across the landscape dot where both Native American and U.S. Cavalrymen fell.
Those interested can experience Little Bighorn Battlefield via the battlefield’s Cellphone Audio Tour. Signs are located at tour stops on both the walking and driving tours and stops can be accessed in any order along the journey.
This was one of the most moving locations I’ve encountered on our journey, Our 2 hour pitstop on a long travel day wasn’t as much time as I would have liked to absorb what the site has to offer. Would suggest a lengthier visit for those looking not to be rushed.
