Maple Pass Trail - Okanogan Wenatchee National Forest
Touching the Canadian border and spanning nearly 4 million acres, the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest is the largest national forest of the Pacific Northwest and the secret escape of Washingtonians looking to evade the heavy crowds of the state’s 3 national parks. Firs, pines, and spruce dominate the subalpine forest creating a haven for wildlife that includes hares and pine martens, lynx and wolves, and mountain goats and black bears.
Over 150 campgrounds service Okanogan-Wenatchee with the addition of many dispersed sites throughout the forest.
Beyond the oodles of available hiking trails, the area also supports mountain biking, rock climbing, and in the winter months, snowshoeing as well as Nordic skiing.
We stumbled into this remarkable area by happenstance. Wildfires of 2021 in North Cascades National Park had rangers directing visitors to hikes is safer zones beyond the park’s boundaries. We chose incredible Maple Pass and loved the hike so much that we’ll return one day to explore more.
