Custer State Park
SD Route 87 - Custer SD
Designated a game preserve in 1919, Custer State Park is best know for its free ranging bison herd and its Annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup. The park is also home to bighorn sheep, elk, mountain goats, prairie dogs and coyotes; and if you’re lucky you could spot any one of them along the park’s Wildlife Loop. One of the largest state parks in the U.S., recreation across the park’s 114 square miles includes hiking, fishing, paddling and rock climbing.
We missed the Roundup. Instead, we spent time in Custer State Park on scenic Needles Highway. The drive is a favorite of visitors to the park, and it was made more impressive by a show of impressive fall foliage.
The drive is just one of three scenic drives in Custer State Park and includes hairpin turns, narrow tunnels and several pullouts with amazing views and great photo ops.
Looking forward to returning to Custer State Park in the future and doing more in-depth exploring.
