Washed Ashore Gallery

Washed Ashore Gallery - Bandon OR

Strolling through the streets of Bandon we passed an odd yet interesting fish sculpture in an unassuming location. Intrigued to know more, we followed its signs to the Washed Ashore Gallery on 1st Street. Founded in 2010 by Angela Haseltine Pozzi, the Washed Ashore project works to educate the community and the world on the gravity of garbage tainting the Earth’s oceans.

On the floor of the gallery, giant sea life sculptures created solely from collected beach debris fill the space. Displays are equal parts fantastic and tragic. Plastic bottles create seaweed. Bottle caps form fins. Styrofoam chunks create coral. Swim shoes highlight eyes. Plastic lighters and toothbrushes dangle as tentacles. Beer cans and beach toys. Shotgun shells and synthetic rope. Examining each piece highlights mans impact on the world’s waters.

The gallery’s home remains in Bandon, OR with expansion plans for a waterfront space in Coos Bay. The non-profit organization has reached beyond its home state with traveling Washed Ashore exhibits that have been displayed in zoos, aquariums, and science centers across the US. A permanent exhibit resides at the Smithsonian Washington DC.

Those interested in donating to the non-profit, hosting an exhibition, or willing to volunteer can contact washedashore.org for more information.
