Face Rock State Scenic Viewpoint

Circles In The Sand - Bandon OR

A classic picturesque Pacific Northwest location, Face Rock State Scenic Viewpoint - located in Bandon OR - overlooks a number of rock formations at the edge of the Pacific Ocean. The viewpoint includes picnic tables, restrooms (tucked in the trees in the parking lot), and a steep stairway that leads to the beach to explore the shoreline.

Face Rock gets its name from a rock jutting out of the ocean that resembles the profile of a face gazing into the sky. Coquille legend also says one can hear a maiden’s voice in the wind.

One of the biggest summer draws at Face Rock is Circles in the Sand. What began as a meditative beach practice for artist Denny Dyke, has turned into large scale sand art the public now enjoys. The labyrinths are drawn out in the intertidal areas of the beach every other weekend during morning’s low tide and last until the tide returns.

Birders will want to bring their binoculars to enjoy watching common murres, tufted puffins, and other sea birds hanging out at the ocean’s edge.

Tunnels and caves in the sea stacks and intertidal caves wait to be explored on the beach. Water shoes will come in handy for visitors looking to navigate the rocks!
