Newport
Bay Front Boat Basin- Newport OR
Touted as the Dungeness Crab Capital of the World and the perfect place to escape summer heat waves, Newport, Oregon has plenty to explore. Tucked along streets of historic architecture are museums, galleries, gift shops and coffee houses. It’s beaches are excellent for spotting bald eagles and whales. Two local lighthouses occupy Yaquina Bay and Yaquina Head. And outdoor recreationalist can find crabbing, fishing, and year-round surfing.
Traveling HWY 101 on travel day, we took the opportunity to lunch in Newport and decide if it was worthy of a future revisit.
We had lunch at Mo’s Seafood & Chowder House, walked into a few gift shops, and stopped at Bay Front Boat Basin to get better views of the bay and Yaquina Bay Bridge.
It was nice to see what you hear about Newport, OR isn’t all hype. Attractions that caught our eye for next time are the lighthouses, the Hatfield Marine Science Center, and the Oregon Coast Aquarium. Watching the Sea Lions lounge on the docks would be a hoot. And it’d be interesting to see how Agate Beach Newport compares to Agate Beach Coos Bay.
