Cleetwood Cove Trail
Crater Lake National Park
2.1 mile out & back- 633 elev gain - moderate
JUL 2021
Cleetwood Cove Trail is wildly popular in Crater Lake National Park as it provides the only access to the lakeshore, leads visitors to boat tours for the lake and Wizard Island, and leads hopeful simmers to areas where they can jump in the lake.
We made it to the trail head by 9am and found plenty of parking. And we passed just a handful of people on the trail.
At the lake, the shore is gorgeous and worth the effort in both directions to witness it up close. We took time to stick our toes in the water - nice and cold! - and watch chipmunks raid unattended bags.
On the trek out, we passed loads of swimmers headed for the water. So, arrive early.
Things to know
The descent from Rim Road to the shore is steep, steep, steep. Be aware - plan accordingly.
The trail is mostly shaded - with benches dispersed for breaks - and wide enough to allow visitors to go at their own pace.
There is zero shade on the shore and those looking to hang out at the lake must find a rock to perch on or set their belongings.
