Cape Blanco Lighthouse

Cape Blanco Lighthouse -Port Orford OR

With construction beginning in 1869, Cape Blanco Lighthouse holds the distinction as the oldest continually operating lighthouse in Oregon. It’s also the most westerly lighthouse in the state as well as its highest beacon above sea level. Guided tours of the lighthouse are typically offered Wednesday-Monday, April through October - and include details on the uniqueness of the Cape Blanco Lighthouse and a visit to the lantern room.

The road to the lighthouse is closed to motor vehicles. Visitors to the cape must walk a quarter mile to the lighthouse to visit the grounds or attend a tour. With the bay to the north and reef breaks to the south, the walk itself is worthwhile.

The world was shuttered for round 2 of COVID during 2021, and the lighthouse was closed the day of our visit. We roamed the grounds taking in the views and referring to interactive signs to learn what we could about the lighthouse.

We were 1 of 2 couples on the grounds, and with the exception of not being able to tour the lighthouse, it was pretty spectacular experiencing the uncrowded cape.
