Old Saint Patrick’s Catacombs
Old Saint Patrick’s Catacombs - New York NY
Listed on the National Register of Historical Places, the Basilica of Saint Patrick’s Old Cathedral was built in the early 1800’s and served as the seat of the Archdiocese of New York until the completion of the Cathedral of Saint Patrick in 1879. Tours of catacombs include the walled cemeteries, the catacomb crypts, and a walk through the Cathedral.
We enjoy hearing the history behind places we, see and we appreciated having the chance to walk the basilica and grounds of Old Saint Patrick’s.
That said, the catacombs tour is not what’s evoked when one hears the term catacombs. We were expecting something similar to the Paris Catacombs, and that this was not.
Still interesting to see, just not what we were expecting.
