Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge

Tschache Pool - Savannah NY

The Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge sits just north of Cayuga Lake; a neighboring finger lake east of Seneca Lake. The 10k+ acre refuge works to restore the natural marshlands and accompanying wildlife impacted by the creation of manmade canals and waterways of the early 1900s. The habitat of swamp, wetlands, and grasslands are perfect for native and migratory birds and a terrific spot for birdwatchers. A handful of walking/hiking trails weave around the preserve, but Wildlife Drive allows you to enjoy the views from your car.

The Montezuma NWR has a modest visitor center with example specimens of birds that can be spotted in the area. Here, we learned the refuge is not only crucial for to nesting and breeding of New York’s native waterfowl, but it’s also a critical stop for migratory birds. A sizable porch off the west side of the building provides views of Black Lake and beyond.

Given it was a hot (90°+) and humid summer afternoon, we opted to stay cool and experience the refuge via Wildlife Drive. In the heat of the day, most critters lay low. But we did come across a few Heron sneaking through the marsh, and a handful of Red-winged Blackbirds hanging out in the shrubs.
