Spatter Cone & Snow Cone Trails

Craters of the Moon National Monument & Preserve

JUN 2021

.20 mile out & back - 16’ elev gain - easy

These “trails” are really tiny offshoots accessed near the southern trailhead of North Crater Trail, so they’re easy to get to. The paths are paved and lead to mild-vertigo-inducing viewing platforms that allow visitors to see down into the cones. Our peak inside revealed traces of snow and random tourist items like hats and trash.

Spatter Cone and Snow Cone are spatters cones - some of the rarest volcanic features on earth. Interpretive signage on the trails includes photographs documenting each cone’s erosion from human footsteps and the preservation measures taken by the park to ensure their longevity.

Neat trail. Cool facts. A little sad to see.

happy hikng!
