Georgia Aquarium

Ocean Voyager - Georgia Aquarium

Located in the heart of Atlanta near World of Coca-Cola, the CNN Center, and Centennial Park; the Georgia Aquarium has thousands of animals in more than 60 habitats. Galleries throughout the aquarium showcases some of the world’s most remarkable aquatic creatures. Whale sharks, penguins, and beluga whales join the big-bellied seahorse, the common murre, the Baja blue rock lizard, and the black spot piranha through 7 galleries that collectively contain more than 11 million gallons of water.

It’s been a hot minute since our last visit, bur Georgia Aquarium has had a growth spurt! Their new expansion includes an exciting shark gallery, SHARKS! Predators of the Deep. The new tanks are massive. The floor-to-ceiling acrylic viewing windows are impressive. And if you’re brave enough, you can squeeze into a wetsuit and cage dive with the sharks right there in the Aquarium. The new gallery works to educate patrons on the challenges sharks face and the importance of their role in the ocean’s ecosystem.

The South Company River Scout gallery focuses on freshwater animals that reside in rivers around the globe. From piranha to alligator snapping turtles, visitors get eye-to-eye with some of the world’s unique creatures.

The Tropical Diver gallery focuses on tropical reefs. Garden eels and jelly fish occupy smaller tanks, but the gallery’s biggest highlight is the Pacific Barrier Reef Exhibit. With curved glass arcing overhead giving the feel of being underwater, the 164,000 gallon tank is designed to allow a closer view of reef life and displays a variety of tropical fish darting around living coral.

It’s hard to determine which critter is most popular in the Cold-Water Quest gallery. The penguins are quite cute frolicking on about their rocks, but the Beluga Whales are just as playful as the Sea Otters.

The most popular exhibit of the Georgia Aquarium is Ocean Voyager. The gallery’s 100ft long tunnel carries visitors beneath 6.3 million gallons of water, and as the aquarium’s largest tank, the exhibit provides an incredible viewing platform for its famed whale sharks, a variety of rays, and several species of fish.

Lives shows at the Georgia Aquarium display the athleticism and intelligence of two of the aquariums amazing creatures. Access to both shows are included with general admission, but same day seating reservations are required for both Dolphin Presentation and Sea Lion Presentation. Preferred seating at the dolphin show is available at additional cost.

The aquarium also offers animal encounters at varying prices. Encounters give visitors the opportunity to touch and participate in the training of some of the aquariums wonderous creatures. Encounters extend to dolphins, penguins, sea lions, harbor seals, belugas, and sea otters.

The Sharks & Ray Interaction allows visitors to get suited up and join aquarium staff in interacting with the facility’s sharks and rays. Pricing can be found here.
