Theater of the Sea
Theater of the Sea - Islamorada FL
Located in the middle of the Florida Keys sits one of the oldest marine facilities in the world. The tropical gardens and lagoons of Theater of the Sea are home to a variety of marine life, including sharks and sting rays, as well as various tropical birds. Animals of the facility have been rescued, rehabilitated and deemed unreleasable; and their care is supported solely through patronage. Dolphin, sea lion, and parrot shows run daily.
Bottomless boat rides are included with the price of admission.
Theater of the Sea is a remarkable place made even more unique by the intimate atmosphere the facility creates for its animals. Dedicated spaces are quaint and small making each experience more enjoyable.
The lagoon for wading and snorkeling has beautiful blue parrot fish and sits immediately adjacent to the Fish, Shark & Ray Feeding talk that occurs three times daily.
At the Sea Turtle Talk, we watched a sea turtle amputee that had lost a flipper after it was tangled in discarded fishing line. We also learned how the facility uses weights to correct buoyancy issues in sea turtles with propeller injuries.
Theater of the Sea offers various animal interactions. We signed up for Wade with the Dolphin and were thrilled with our choice. Our group was small; 6 in total and included young children. Our dolphin, Julie, was excited and playful! And Amanda, her trainer, was calm, patient and attentive making for a remarkable experience.
The shows and talks of Theater of the Sea run consecutively three times a day, so it’s easy to flow from one show to the next. Simply find the show in progress when you arrive. However, animal interaction times overlap, so plan accordingly should you want to see all the shows presented.
