Submarine Force Library & Museum
USS George Washington Sail - Groton CT
Originally a submarine library garnering respect for its research selection and donated to the United States Navy in 1964, the Submarine Force Library and Museum now houses more than 33,000 artifacts, countless documents and photographs that cycle regularly, and is home to the world’s first nuclear powered submarine; the USS Nautilus.
A free museum that accepts donations, we didn’t even know a museum specific to submarines could be a thing; so this is an unexpected nugget!
The entry courtyard for the museum contains different components of various subs and most pieces are accompanied by interpretive signs.
The sign for the Swimmer Delivery Vehicle (pictured below), mentions its use by SEALs piggybacking on submarines for a greater range of stealth, mobility, and endurance.
A self-guided tour within the museum allows visitors to or soak in every last exhibit or breeze through admiring just the things they’re interested in. Exhibits cover history, technology, and military affairs.
The Submarine Force Library & Museum also offers the only augmented reality experience among the nations Navy Museums. QR codes throughout the museum accent the self-guided tour experience.
One of the biggest draws to the museum is the opportunity to tour the USS Nautilus. To our disappointment, the the world’s first nuclear powered submarine was was out for repairs. No tour for us!
