Gillette Castle
Gillette Castle - Lyme CT
Creation of William Gillette, an actor best known for his stage portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, and built of fieldstone collected from the surrounding area, the 14,000 square foot Gillette Castle contains 27 rooms, 47 one of a kind doors, and is the star attraction of Gillette State Park overlooking the Connecticut River.
This was a fun and unique place to explore even in the summer. Its location nestled among the trees would be even more spectacular in autumn. Easy to understand why Gillette Castle is one of the top attractions in Connecticut.
The visitors center offers a short film on the life of William Gillette but also has a handful of interpretive signs for those who want to scoot along faster.
Also on display is one of Gillette’s electric train engines used on the property.
Tours of the castle are available seasonally, typically late May through the beginning of September. The tour allows visitors to see the incredible craftsmanship and ingenious contraptions Gillette created for his quirky home. Some of our favorites are the hand carved light switches crafted to resemble backstage theater levers.
We adored this place! One of the coolest sites we’ve come across in all of our travels. We didn’t walk the nature trails or explore the railways Gillette designed around the property, but we’d would love to return at a later date in autumn to explore the grounds.
Limited tickets are also available over the holiday season, and visitors are encouraged to purchase as far in advance as possible. During this festive time visitors can also find guided train trail hikes, a bon fire and free cider for all.
