Burrells Ford Campground
Burrells Ford Campground Parking - Mountain Rest SC
Open year round and free of charge, Burrells Ford is a park-in-the-lot, hike-to-a-site, no-cell-service campground on the beautifully secluded Chattooga River in Mount Rest, SC. Campsites are first come, first served with picnic tables and fire rings. Grounds include vault toilets and dumpsters.
Burrells Ford is our first experience camping so far off grid. Until now, all of our camping adventures have been in national parks.
Our kids have camped here on numerous occasions and we collectively decided this would be a great spot to visit and catch up after a year+ away. They shared the ins-and-outs, so we were prepared before we arrived.
We arrived first and had a rough idea of the campsite our kids wanted and decided to scope it out while waiting on their arrival.
The marker indicates its a .3 mile walk to the grounds. What it doesn’t indicate is the elevation change. Walking down isn’t the problem. It’s climbing the 157 ft back to your vehicle if you need to make multiple trips. Our kids recommended we get a wagon. Absolutely the best tool we brought on this trip.
The kids arrived and we had our very own wagon train!
Campsites are a well spaced and decently sized. And a handful are doubles for groups. It’s an impressive set up and the nicest we’ve encounter in our limited camping experience.
There are a number of hiking trails shooting off Burrells Ford Campground. Some lead to waterfalls and some follow the Chattooga River that creates the border between South Carolina and Georgia beginning at Ellicott Rock.
We explored King Creek Falls Trail and Spoonauger Falls Trail via the Chattooga River.
Both were excellent short hikes, and neither was overly crowded.
Burrells Ford also offers one of the best trout fishing locations along the Chattooga River. If you get a campsite on the river, expect to see a few anglers trying to get a good catch.
