Bennington Battle Monument
Bennington Battle Monument - Bennington VT
Commemorating the August 16, 1777 Battle of Bennington and its significance as a pivotal victory in the Revolutionary War, the Bennington Battle Monument rises over 306-feet, is the tallest structure in the Green Mountain State, and is the second tallest unreinforced masonry building in the U.S.- second only to the Washington Monument.
Beautiful monument. Small grounds, but neat and tidy.
Access to the tower is seasonal, and tickets must be purchased at the gift shop on the west side of Monument Circle.
The lower level of the monument is covered in history. The British cooking kettle confiscated by Americans hangs from ceiling and a terrific diorama depicts Seth Warner and his Green Mountain Boys charging their foes during the Battle of Bennington.
There are 417 steps in the Bennington Battle Monument, but ticket holders get to take the elevator up.
On a clear day visitors can see 3 states. Center windows on each side indicate which direction your facing and what you see.
Every year on the anniversary of the Battle of Bennington, reenactors are onsite discussing the battle and what life was like for Colonial Soldiers.
But for our visit, we were the only visitors in the tower which made for a great experience. Same with the grounds and the gift shop.
Great stop rich in history.
