Angels Landing Trail
Zion National Park
4.4 Miles - 1604’ elev gain - hard
MAY 2021
Angel’s Landing Trail is an extremely popular hike in Zion National Park. It’s difficult. I don’t care how fit you think you are, there’s nothing like grinding up a set of switchbacks and being passed by people who could be your grandparents. It’s a humbling experience.
This hike has several distinct sections:
Walking with the Virgin River: you’re not right next to it, but you can see it.
First set of switch backs that bring you up the canyon wall.
Turning away from the river and snaking between canyon walls. It’s cool and shady… you’re grateful for it.
The second set of switchbacks - 21 of them - aka Walter’s Wiggles. Designed by a masochist. Doesn’t matter that it’s cool and shady anymore: you’re just trying to catch your breath.
Scout Lookout. As you turn the corner from Walter’s Wiggles, people are lounging around eating snacks and taking breaks. Even has potties nearby. You think your done. and then you see them - the chains…
If it sounds ominous, it’s because it is. You realize the hike’s not over. You think to yourself, “I didn’t hike all this way not to do the most important part.” So, you mosey on over and get _ in _line.
The Chains:
Intermittent sections of chain placed along the spine of the ridge help hikers traverse the remaining half mile of the hike to Angels Landing. Where chain is present, there is enough room on the spine or ledge for a single file line - but traffic moves both directions. So, a delicate dance of turn taking occurs with a healthy dose of patience. The reward at the end is a spectacular view of Zion Canyon that no photo can accurately portray.
We were lucky enough to complete Angels Landing in the Spring of 2021.
The Angels Landing Permit Lottery began April 1, 2022.
Permits are required for the Chains section only and must be obtained through Recreation.gov
