Deadwood
Town Wagon - Deadwood SD
Located in the Black Hills of South Dakota and founded on a gulch of dead trees and a creek loaded with gold, Deadwood quickly became a boom town for prospectors, gamblers and outlaws. Today, it’s a cute little historic town devoted to reenactments of the town’s historic events, shopping and - holding true to its roots - modern day gambling.
Outdoor recreation in Deadwood is also huge. Hiking, biking, horseback rides and scenic drives fill spring, summer, and fall; along with fishing. And, ATV riders have miles of trails to explore. Winter recreation is just as popular with snowmobiling and nearby Terry Peak Ski resort.
We spent an afternoon checking out Deadwood and seeing what it had to offer.
Stopping by the visitors center we learned a little about the surrounding area. The building itself is a historic train depot built in 1897 and contains a few interactive exhibits on things like Deadwood’s history and Black Hills wildlife. A replica of a miner’s tent occupies the main space and is a nice touch.
Lunch at the Buffalo Bodega Complex was great. According to the menu, the Buffalo Bar is one of the oldest establishments in Deadwood and still occupies the same 1877 location. As such, it’s a popular stop and there was a bit of a wait -- but worth it. Great place to try local brews.
Afterward, we roamed Historic Main Street dipping in and out of gift shops and checking out a couple of casinos. We determined Deadwood is really a playground for big kids!
