National Museum of the American Indian - Washington D.C.
The National Museum of the American Indian, located on the National Mall in Washington D.C., spans more than 12,000 years of history and includes more than 1,200 indigenous cultures across the Western Hemisphere.
Input from tribes of the Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and American Indian on matters of architecture and exhibitions have helped create a rich and dynamic museum with one of the largest collections of Native American objects in the world.
The National Museum of the American Indian was delightfully peaceful after the zoo we experienced at the National Air and Space Museum.
It was an impromptu addition to our day, it’s free, and timed-entry tickets are not required. We grabbed a coffee at the museums Mitsitam Café and Espresso Bar and prepared to access the museums QR Code audio tour.
It’s recommended to start touring on level 4 and work your way down. The tour flows naturally overall, but the beginning exhibit Our Universes is overly segmented which made it difficult to determine it we missed a culture. The dioramas here are impressive and give life to the different cultures and customs of the Indigenous people.
The history in Nation to Nation: Treaties Between the United States and American Indian Nations is extensive and appreciated. And Return to a Native Place located on the balcony of level 2 was the perfect place to learn about American Indian tribes of the Chesapeake Bay.
Great educational museum.
The architecture of the building and landscape on the grounds are phenomenal.
