Quechee Gorge

The Ottauquechee River - White River Junction VT

The deepest gorge throughout Vermont, the 165-foot deep Quechee Gorge is the result of a ancient glacial lake that melted at the end of the last ice age. Today, the gorge is spanned by a steel arched bridge and is the key attraction of Quechee State Park. Steep trails to the river below and the Quechee Gorge Bridge above provide fantastic opportunities for viewing the phenomenon 13,000 years in the making.

We didn’t intend to hike the day we visited Quechee Gorge, so we weren’t prepared. But, we did take the trail part of the way. Since the trail is heavily wooded, you can only see the bridge through peeks in the trees.

If you can make it to the bottom of the gorge, the trail skirts close to the river’s edge and has pretty views of the bridge.
