“Big Mike” - Bozeman MT
Located in Bozeman, MT, the Museum of the Rockies — an extension of Montana State University — is dedicated to the education of both the cultural and natural histories of the Northern Rocky Mountain region. Permanent exhibits include a planetarium, a living history farm and the nicely curated Siebel Dinosaur Complex.
Visitors to the museum are immediately greeted on entry by “Big Mike.” Cast from the original bones of a Montanan find, the life-sized bronze recreation showcases one of the world’s most complete T. Rex skeletons ever discovered.
Inside the museum, The Siebel Dinosaur Complex features the Hall of Giants and Hall of Horns and Teeth. Here, several examples of fossilized T. Rex skulls sit at the feet of “Big Al” — a juvenile Allosaurus skeleton prominently displayed in the center of the hall.
Equally impressive is the Triceratops collection that includes a wall of fossilized skulls depicting different stages of life.
Of course, recreations are also on display throughout the complex; but the museum has an extensive collection of fossils. One of the greatest qualities of these fossils is the honest representation of fossil vs. filler.
Instead of working to hide what’s missing, the Museum of the Rockies effectively highlights it — giving objects greater authenticity.
Beyond fossils, the museum provides exhibits on the cultural history of Montana. Visitors can learn of the origins of the Native American Sioux, Cheyenne, and Blackfeet and admire the artistry of Native American clothing.
Tools, textiles, vehicles and furnishings from pioneer days dominate Paugh History Hall, while the Living History Farm, located on museum grounds, immerses visitors in recreated structures that include a black smith shop, a root cellar, and granary.
The heart of the exhibit is the Tinsley House, an original 1889 homestead of Willow Creek. The home was moved to the museum grounds and restored and now showcases costumed interpreters demonstrating homestead life during the summer months.
Other features of the museum are the Taylor Planetarium that features 20-30 minute shows and the Martin Children’s Discovery Center that allows kids to touch, examine and experience.
A surprising gem in south Bozeman.
