Silver Dollar City
Silver Dollar City - Sunset Cover Township MO
Beginning in 1894 as a simple cavern attraction known as Marvel Cave, Silver Dollar City has expanded to a 61 acre 1880s style theme park containing rides and attractions, live shows and concerts, and a colony of over 100 artisans demonstrating craftsmanship skills of the 19th century. Blacksmithing, candle making, glassblowing, and woodworking are just a few of the skills demonstrated among shops peppered throughout Silver Dollar City, and creations are available for purchase as souvenirs.
The original cave is still toured today and is included in the cost of park admission.
Annual events are huge in Silver Dollar City. Our timing was good and we were lucky enough to experience the fun of the park’s Harvest Festival. Among the smell of apples and cinnamon in the air were hundreds of pumpkins carved and displayed in fabulous ways. We found a sea of simple single carvings, and the unique towering creations of Pumpkins in the City gave us great ideas for our own future Halloweens!
We’re not amusement park people, so we shied away from the rides. But, this a cute park. that’s family-friendly and well laid out. Having spent mid-day on a lunch cruise with the Showboat Branson Belle - also affiliated with Silver Dollar City, but separate in cost and location - we missed most craftsmanship demonstrations as they had shut down for the day by the time we’d arrived.
We came for the heavily advertised pumpkin displays and were not disappointed. We found them the best displays we’ve seen yet. In fact Pumpkin in the City was well done we’d return in the future to experience the park’s Old Time Christmas event.
