Lincoln Memorial
Abraham Lincoln - Washington D.C
One of the most recognized sites in the United States and the most visited memorial in the country, the undeniable beauty and grandeur of the Lincoln Memorial and its accompanying reflecting pool cannot be overstated.
In addition to the 19-foot-tall statue of Abraham Lincoln in the central chamber, walls of the north and south flanking chambers are etched the entire Gettysburg address and the Second Inaugural Address of America’s 16th president, respectively.
The thirty-six columns surrounding the memorial represent each state in the U.S. at the time of Lincolns assassination. Above each column is inscribed a state’s name and the date it entered the union.
The 2,029-foot-long Reflecting Pool was completed a year after the memorials dedication.
Eighteen steps from the top landing, visitors can find the I Have a Dream marker. Placed in 2003 40 years after Dr. Kings delivery, the marker indicates the exact location on which the Civil Rights activist stood while delivering his moving speech.
