Lackawanna Coal Mine

Lackawanna Coal Mine Visitor Center - Scranton PA

Set on the only anthracite reserves in the United States - Pennsylvania’s Northern Anthracite Coal Field, the Lackawanna Coal Mine opened in 1860 and helped fuel much of the Industrial Revolution with its high heat, clean burning, low soot ore.

Today, Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour carries visitors 300 feet into the earth sharing details and dangers of coal mining. Together with the Anthracite Heritage Museum and interpretive signs around the grounds, visitors get a glimpse of the day in the life of a 19th/20th century coal miner.

Fun experience! And neat to see in-depth and in-person how a coal mine works.

For the tour, we were provided with hardhats and a bumpy ride 300-feet down the mineshaft in a minecar - backwards! Our guide led us through tunnels for roughly a quarter mile and stopped at designated stations to share about the mining process.
