Foothills Parkway

Foothills Parkway - GSMNP

Authorized by congress in 1944, Foothills Parkway is currently the oldest unfinished highway project in Tennessee. When complete, the scenic parkway will stretch 72 miles from its southwest entrance near Chilhowee, TN to the northeast entrance near Crosby. Sweeping overlooks and winding turns through rugged terrain make completed sections of the Foothills Parkway one of the most scenic rides in the Smoky Mountains.

A ride on the Foothills Parkway on a clear autumn day when the foliage is on display would be ideal. It wasn’t autumn. And it wasn’t a clear day. But our ride through the Smoky’s was beautiful in its own way.

Low hanging clouds blocked most vistas throughout the drive and at overlooks. But you can’t say we weren’t prepared!

There are times on our scenic rides when I think a motorcycle would be great. This wasn’t one of those days. We were happy to be warm and cozy in Hank. But maybe, just maybe, in a future autumn, we’ll experience the Foothills Parkway again with 2 wheels instead of 4.
