Matlacha
Matlacha Pass Bridge, Matlacha FL
A cool little seaside fishing village with an artsy vibe, Matlacha is a tiny island in Matlacha Pass and is part of the greater Fort Myers area. Mat-la-shay means “Big Warrior” is Seminole, and the tiny town is known for its big color and laid back vibe. Brightly colored buildings of shops, galleries, and Old Florida homes line Pine Island Road all the way through town giving a funky feel, while boats bob and anglers reel in their catch of the day in the pass.
On September 28, 2022, Category 4 Hurricane Ian made landfall near the island of Cayo Costa, FL. Damage to the island and the surrounding greater Fort Myers area was catastrophic. Many communities lost businesses and homes. The determined began the arduous process of rebuilding. Others have chosen to move on.
This is such a cool place for a lazy day. The colors of Matlacha are crazy vibrant and an attraction all their own. They give the town a groovy feel that we haven’t come across anywhere else on our journey.
Spent a day exploring town with Bec. We had lunch at the Yucatan Waterfront Bar and Grill. The Shark Tacos are delicious! And who doesn’t love a little umbrella?
After lunch we poked through a number of boutiques and walked away with cute loot from Leoma Lovegrove Gallery and Gardens. The gallery showcases the work of international artist Leoma Lovegrove. Love Scribbles!
On a different day, Lee and I stopped in Matlacha and stopped at Bat House Park. It’s quite possibly the smallest park we’ve ever been to, but in its defense, it is on a tiny island. The bath house provides a home for the Brazilian free-tailed bat; one of 13 bat species located across Florida.
