Biking Pine Island
Fishing Pier - Bokeelia FL
The largest island in the southwest Florida, Pine Island is a short 17 miles long and 3 to 4 miles wide at it’s widest point. It has a single main road running the length of the island and zero traffic lights. Perfect for an early morning bike ride between the towns of Bokeelia on the north end and St James City on the south. Groves of mango, coconut, and palm line much of the way and make the ride interesting. It also passes a number of nature preserves.
On September 28, 2022, Category 4 Hurricane Ian made landfall near the island of Cayo Costa, FL. Damage to the island and the surrounding greater Fort Myers area was catastrophic. Many communities lost businesses and homes. The determined began the arduous process of rebuilding. Others have chosen to move on.
I spent a few mornings checking out Pine Island by bike and found it extremely bike friendly. Great place for a novice cycler. It was equally fun taking side jaunts and exploring random neighborhoods off the Stringfellow Bike Trail. Got caught up in deep sand on primitive roads. Too tough for these little legs. Also wiped out on a turn trying to avoid a surprise ditch. Fun times!
