Cave of the Winds

Cave of the Winds - Niagara Falls NY

Not to be confused with Cave of the Winds Mountain Park in Manitou Springs CO, Cave of the Winds Niagara Falls is an attraction of Niagara Falls State Park that takes visitors 175 feet down into Niagara Gorge and to the base of Bridal Veil Falls. Wooden stairs and walkways guide visitors to the “Hurricane Deck” where they can feel the powerful spray of the 181 foot falls - the smallest of the Niagara Falls.

*During the off season the catwalk and hurricane deck at the Cave of the Winds is not available. It is removed every Fall and rebuilt in the Spring. The catwalk and hurricane deck typically re-opens every year during the last week in May. -Niagara Falls

It sounds cool because it is cool! And we’d say its a must-do if you ever visit Niagara Falls from either side!

The park provides a bright yellow poncho for every visitor and we wore our own waterproof shoes.

Before we descended, we were led to an exhibit room with history and facts about the area. A short film on the history of Niagara Falls and how frivolous people once were with the area.

In the tunnels to the Hurricane Deck, we passed a number of interpretive signs. Our minds’ were blown when we read about the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stopping the flow of water to American and Bridal Veil Falls for 5+ months to study rock formations.

Once out of the tunnel, we were set loose to enjoy the walkways on our own. The wide boardwalk follows the river for a short distance before leading to numerous flights of stairs with small viewing decks.

Rubber mats help visitors keep their footing.

The base of Bridal Veil Falls is awesome in every sense of the word. There’s zero percent chance you’ll stay dry; but in the blazing heat of summer, we found the spray is crisp and cool!

We can’t recommend Cave of the Winds Niagara highly enough!

The biggest takeaway we can share is to wear waterproof shoes. And even though we were in the shade, we found shades helped us from squinting against water spray. Just expect to get wet! Because it’s gonna happen!
